Emergency services responded to a fatal collision on Yarm Road in Eaglescliffe on Wednesday morning, August 5, after a car left the roadway and struck a tree near Preston Park. According to Cleveland Police, the incident was reported at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Yarm Road between Chestnut Road and Quarry Road. A silver Mercedes C220 travelling along the road left the carriageway before colliding with a tree.
Police confirmed that the driver, a 56-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency responders. The Great North Air Ambulance Service attended the incident, landing in nearby Preston Park, while paramedics, firefighters, and police officers worked at the scene.
The road remained closed in both directions for around two hours as emergency services treated the incident, carried out investigations, and recovered the vehicle.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the collision occurred after the driver is believed to have suffered a medical episode while behind the wheel. Officers have stated there is currently no indication that any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
PC Nathan Hood, of the Matrix Roads Policing Team, paid tribute to those who stopped to help before emergency crews arrived.
“The 56-year-old man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. Officers and the family of the man who died would like to thank members of the public who carried out CPR until paramedics arrived.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, although early findings suggest the medical emergency was the primary factor in the collision.
The tragic event caused significant disruption for commuters travelling through Eaglescliffe during the morning, with motorists advised to seek alternative routes until the scene was cleared and Yarm Road reopened.
As the investigation continues, heartfelt condolences are extended to the man’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The compassion shown by members of the public who immediately stopped to provide assistance has also been widely acknowledged by emergency services.
