The Durand, Michigan, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Robert “Bobby” Cawson, beloved principal of Bertha Neal Elementary School, who tragically passed away on August 1, 2026, at the age of 40 following a fatal head-on collision in Shiawassee County. According to the Michigan State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Durand and Lennon Roads in Venice Township. Investigators reported that Robert was traveling northbound in a GMC Sierra pickup truck when it collided head-on with a southbound Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 56-year-old woman from Byron. Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
For nearly two decades, Robert dedicated his life to education. He began his teaching career in 2006 at Tomek Eastern Elementary before serving as a first- and fourth-grade teacher in Swartz Creek Community Schools, later teaching fifth grade in East Lansing Public Schools. In 2019, he became principal of Bertha Neal Elementary, where he quickly earned the admiration of students, staff, and parents through his compassionate leadership and unwavering dedication.
Robert held a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Public Administration in Educational Leadership from the University of Michigan-Flint. Throughout his career, he championed student success, coordinated after-school enrichment programs, promoted school safety initiatives, and mentored fellow educators.
