The Richland County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim of a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning in Columbia, South Carolina. According to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, the victim has been identified as 58-year-old Jose Nunez of Columbia, South Carolina. Nunez lost his life after his vehicle left the roadway and overturned in a devastating crash on Trotter Road.

The collision happened at approximately 1:09 a.m. on Sunday along Trotter Road near its intersection with Crestmore Drive, prompting an emergency response from local law enforcement and first responders. Officials say Nunez was traveling eastbound when, for reasons that remain under investigation, his vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway.

Authorities reported that after leaving the road, the vehicle struck multiple fixed objects, including a tree, a culvert, and a utility power pole, before overturning. The violent sequence of impacts caused catastrophic damage to the vehicle.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene shortly after receiving reports of the crash. Despite their efforts, Jose Nunez suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement following the identification of the victim, Coroner Naida Rutherford said, “We will continue working with the South Carolina Highway Patrol to fully investigate this crash.”

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. At this time, investigators have not released any information regarding possible contributing factors, including speed, weather conditions, mechanical issues, or whether impairment may have played a role. The investigation remains active, and authorities are expected to provide additional updates as more information becomes available.

Single-vehicle crashes involving roadside objects often require detailed reconstruction efforts to establish the sequence of events. Investigators will examine physical evidence from the scene, vehicle damage, and any available witness statements as they work to determine exactly what happened during the early morning crash.

The death of Jose Nunez marks another tragic reminder of the dangers motorists face on roadways, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. His passing has left family members, friends, and the Columbia community mourning the loss of a loved one whose life ended unexpectedly.

As the investigation continues, officials encourage anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of Jose Nunez during this difficult time. More details are expected to be released once investigators complete their examination of the incident.
