A tragic single-vehicle rollover crash claimed the life of Eric Hillard Lee, 55, of Corvallis, on Monday afternoon, August 3, 2026, along Highway 20, approximately seven miles west of Philomath. The fatal incident has left family, friends, and the local community mourning as investigators continue working to determine what caused the devastating crash.
According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious rollover collision. A preliminary investigation revealed that Lee was driving a black 1999 Honda Passport westbound on Highway 20 when, for reasons that remain unknown, the vehicle crossed the roadway and rolled over before coming to rest on the eastbound side of the highway. Sadly, Lee did not survive the crash.
The collision prompted authorities to close Highway 20 at Priest Road for nearly two hours while members of the Benton County Crash Team documented the scene and gathered evidence. During the closure, traffic was safely rerouted onto Highway 223 to allow emergency crews to work without interruption.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office expressed its appreciation to the Philomath Police Department, Philomath Fire and Rescue, the Corvallis Regional Communications Center, and the Oregon Department of Transportation for their coordinated response and assistance throughout the incident.
The investigation into the fatal rollover remains active. Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have relevant information is encouraged to contact the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and reference Case No. 2026-01782. Investigators hope additional information will help determine the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking loss.
