John Weiss Murray Obituary: Vietnam Veteran, Father & Community Leader Remembered in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas — Family and friends are mourning the passing of John Weiss Murray, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, devoted father, grandfather, and longtime community member who died on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. He was 83 years old. Remembered for his strength, determination, and dedication to helping others, John leaves behind a lasting legacy shaped by his military service, his love for his children and grandchildren, and his commitment to serving veterans and his community.

John was born on May 26, 1943, in Ripon, Wisconsin, to John and Nellie Murray. He was the second of three sons and spent his childhood in Ripon, where he graduated from Ripon High School before attending and graduating from Ripon College. In 1968, John joined the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War until 1970. During his military service, he sustained life-changing injuries that left him paraplegic and earned a Purple Heart for his sacrifice. Despite the challenges caused by his injuries, John refused to allow his disability to prevent him from pursuing the life he wanted.

One of John’s greatest dreams was to become a father. Because he was unable to adopt in the United States due to his disability, he traveled to South America, where his brother was working, and adopted two children. His children quickly became the pride and joy of his life. In 1975, John moved to Lubbock, where he began working with the Department of Veterans Affairs in the orthotics department. His own experience as a wounded veteran gave him a unique understanding of the challenges faced by others with serious injuries, and he dedicated his career to helping veterans regain independence and rebuild their lives.

Throughout his career, John continued serving others in several different roles. He worked at Reese Air Force Base, operated his own business, J & J Orthotics, and briefly taught at Brown Elementary. When Reese Air Force Base was deactivated in 1995, John was transferred to Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, where he would make his home for the next 26 years. After retiring from the Air Force, he remained active in his community. He became an active member of the United Methodist Church, served as president of the Del Rio Lions Club, and operated his own tax service. In 2021, John returned to Lubbock so he could live closer to his daughter and family.

John is survived by his children, Elizabeth Murray-Seaman of Lubbock and Michael Murray of Nashville, Tennessee. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Kristoper Gaona and wife Amber of Lubbock, Faith Ann Murray of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Jacob Gaona of Lubbock, and Zachary Seaman of Lubbock, as well as his great-granddaughter, Violet Gaona of Lubbock. He is also survived by his two brothers, William Murray of Florida and Bob Murray of Massachusetts. His family will remember him not only for his service and accomplishments but also as a father who overcame tremendous obstacles to build the family he always dreamed of having.

A Celebration of Life service for John Weiss Murray will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Combest Family Memorial Chapel in Lubbock. Following the service, family members will greet guests and share memories with those who come to honor John’s life. His burial will take place privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made in John’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, honoring the veterans and wounded service members whose lives reflected the same courage and sacrifice that defined John’s own journey. His life will be remembered as a powerful example of resilience, service, fatherhood, and determination.
