The Las Vegas, Nevada, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Officer Austin Abdelnabi, 30, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer who was killed in the line of duty following a shooting Tuesday afternoon.
Officer Abdelnabi joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in November 2023. Sheriff Kevin McMahill described him as a dedicated officer and a U.S. Marine veteran who served his country before continuing his commitment to protecting his community.
According to police, the shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue near I-11 and Mountain Vista Street. Officers responded after receiving a 911 call about an armed suspect at a nearby business who appeared intoxicated and was reportedly waving a firearm.
When officers arrived, they located the suspect and an exchange of gunfire occurred. Officer Abdelnabi was struck and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Abdelnabi studied at Clemson University and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration.
Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft expressed condolences to Officer Abdelnabi’s family and the entire LVMPD community, saying flags at county buildings would be lowered in his honor.
Officer Austin Abdelnabi’s sacrifice will be remembered by his fellow officers, his loved ones, and the community he served. May his memory be honored, and may his family find strength during this difficult time.
