Family, friends, and members of the Port Gibson, Mississippi, community are mourning the loss of 36-year-old Demetrious Gibson, whose life was lost following a tragic drowning incident in the Yazoo Diversion Canal at the City Waterfront in Vicksburg.
According to the Vicksburg Police Department, officers responded around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, after receiving reports that Gibson had entered the water and did not return. Authorities identified him as a resident of Port Gibson, where loved ones are now grieving his passing.
The preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed that Gibson initially entered the water and was able to return safely to shore. Witnesses later reported that he entered the water a second time and did not come back.
Multiple agencies assisted in the search, including the Vicksburg Fire Department, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, and personnel from Ergon. Dive teams conducted an underwater search, and Gibson was recovered from the canal around 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
